Volume Control Damper Inspection & Servicing

Volume control damper servicing keeps the components that regulate airflow through your ductwork working as they were designed to. A volume control damper (VCD) is an adjustable blade or set of blades fitted inside a duct that controls how much air passes through a particular branch. When VCDs are set correctly, air is distributed evenly to every room; when they seize, corrode or drift out of position, some areas are starved of air while others are over-supplied — leading to comfort complaints, wasted energy and a system that no longer performs as commissioned.

What does a volume control damper do?

A VCD is fundamentally about airflow balancing. In a ventilation system, air naturally takes the path of least resistance, so without regulation the nearest or largest branches would receive too much air and distant branches too little. VCDs are set during commissioning to throttle each branch to its designed flow rate, ensuring every space gets the ventilation it was designed for. Over time, dampers can be knocked out of position during other works, seize through dust and corrosion, or lose their locking quadrant — all of which unbalance the system.

How do VCDs differ from fire dampers?

This is one of the most common questions we're asked, and the distinction matters. A volume control damper and a fire damper are not the same thing and are not interchangeable.

• A volume control damper (VCD) is an airflow regulation device. Its job is to set and hold the correct volume of air in a duct branch, day to day, during normal operation. It is adjusted and then locked in position.
• A fire damper is a life-safety device. It normally stays open and does nothing to regulate airflow, but in a fire it closes automatically (via a fusible link or actuator) to stop fire and smoke spreading through ductwork between fire compartments.

In short: a VCD manages comfort and efficiency; a fire damper manages fire safety and must be tested to BS 9999. They are inspected under different regimes, and a VCD service does not replace mandatory fire damper testing. What does VCD inspection and servicing involve?

We inspect and service VCDs as a natural part of ductwork maintenance, and always check them during an air duct clean — dampers are exactly where debris collects. A typical service includes:

• Inspection — checking each damper's blade, spindle, quadrant and locking position for wear, corrosion or obstruction.
• Cleaning — removing the dust and debris that build up around blades and bearings and cause dampers to stick.
• Seized damper remediation — freeing off stuck spindles and blades, and repairing or replacing failed quadrants and locking mechanisms so the damper can be set and held again.
• Position recording — noting damper positions so settings can be preserved or handed to a commissioning engineer.

Do you provide commissioning support?

Yes. Once dampers are freed off and serviceable, they can be re-set to deliver the correct airflow to each part of the building. We support commissioning and re-balancing work by making sure every VCD is accessible, clean and operable, so airflow can be adjusted accurately and locked off. This is particularly valuable after refurbishment, a change of use, or when occupants are reporting rooms that are too stuffy or too draughty — very often the cause is a damper that has drifted or seized rather than a problem with the plant itself.
